Ghost Whisperer : Goodbye Rick Payne
I have here an article from Hollywood Reporter saying that Jay Mohr who plays Professor Rick Payne will be leaving Ghost Whisperer. So, I immediately thought about my previous post about the 5 shadows. Will they kill Payne? I know the article said that the character will go on a sabbatical, but I just thought after that cliff hanger they could’ve used the dying angle.
Anyway, the mystery of the missing shadow is still a mystery.
Here is the article:
Jamie Kennedy is joining the cast of the CBS drama “Ghost Whisperer” as a regular.
On “Ghost,” which returns for a fourth season in the fall, Kennedy will play Eli, a graduate student in psychology at the local university who forms a bond with Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt).
Kennedy, repped by Paradigm, fills the void left by the upcoming departure of Jay Mohr.
Mohr, who had been a regular on “Ghost” for the past two seasons as Professor Rick Payne, is expected to appear on the first couple of episodes when his character, Payne, will go on sabbatical.
Mohr will segue full time to his new series for CBS, the comedy “Project Gary,” on which he plays the title character.

Well, part of me thinks that Prof. Payne has been dead since we last saw him packing up his office to leave a few episodes prior. Yet in the finale at the end, he seems to be talking to Delia as Melinda and her mom walk up…
I cannot remember which episode the office packing was. I am tempted to also go back and review his interactions with Melinda?
Perhaps his leaving the show and his sabbatical will coincide with his “crossover”? Just my 2-cents…

The second shadow from the right, that is supposed to be Payne’s, has no torso. The producers could claim it was Jim’s, who was standing behind the group. Also the shadows line seems displaced to the right, as if there is a light source over to the left, which would be necessary to have Jim’s shadow project a different way than the tilt of the other shadows would suggest. If it is Payne and he is dead, I would love to see them explain with a more inventive rationale than that. A copout by the producers unless there are two suns, but I do not see another way (really hoping there is one, cause Payne is a HUGE loss. I think Jay Mohr is a major up and coming talent, but his agent took a huge risk with Project Gary. Hope they do not pass him into the light. Would be nice if he showed up every now and then to help M.) Also, the final scene does make sense if P is dead. Jim and M knew - when Jim say M walking down the path, he knew what she was doing and that is why he went to the other side of the line, to allow M to do her job; esp delicate in this case. All other Payne interaction could easily have been illusiory. Also, M is wearing black, which is not unusual, but still…..

I have a couple of theories, one may be, Prof Payne has been gone (dead ) for the past few episodes….Melinda usually speaks with him in his office, Prof Payne doesn’t interact with anyone else. OR at the beginning of the next season after he states the fact that there are only 5 shadows, Jim moves right or left and then the sixth shadow is visible….giving both Prof Payne and Melinda a laugh. You know these writers…always looking for a great cliff hanger at the end of each season. I am sure Jay Mohr’s agent would not want his character to be killed off. Who knows how successful this new sitcom will be for Mohr.

It must be Payne, who dies, because if he would live, he cannot see the 6th person, whoes shadow is missing.
